What inspired this piece? Masking fluid and tactile material exploration is my honest answer. I had just purchased watercolour masking fluid and my mind was exploding with ideas of how I could try it out. What is masking fluid? A glue-like fluid you paint onto your artwork to preserve the white underneath. You paint over it, and once dry you rub it off to reveal the white beneath. I used it to create the busy background of this piece. Once I began playing with the masking fluid the subject flowed into view too — SPOTS. My theme became spots. Painted with watercolour and gouache, I drew inspiration from nature’s flower petals, mushrooms’ white splotches, and octopus tentacle suckers. Anxiety is a series that started as a way for me to disconnect from my anxiety and reconnect with my creativity. My inspiration for these pieces was always found nearby, more precisely from the comfort of ‘my spot on the couch’ — I started by drawing something within view and what followed was a surprise, even to me. Each piece is an act of letting go, letting my mind be free and seeing where my hand and my unconscious mind lead me. This print is from the Anxiety collection.
