Poppy

What inspired this piece? For nearly a decade I watched each spring as the beautiful red poppies in our communal garden appeared. Their bright red blooms felt like a rare delight at the end of winter. Once the petals fell, the leftover seed pods always intrigued me—they looked a bit alien and full of possibility. I took a few creative liberties, altering the pods and dreaming up a new alien form for them. Somehow purple felt like their true colour, even though they came from red poppies. Suddenly a curious, busy coloured pencil drawing of purple and yellow exploded onto the page, packed with reimagined poppy pods—each one sporting long stretching tendrils, a playful remnant of the petals from before.

Anxiety is a series that started as a way for me to disconnect from my anxiety and reconnect with my creativity. My inspiration for these pieces was always found nearby, more precisely from the comfort of ‘my spot on the couch’ — I started by drawing something within view and what followed was a surprise, even to me. Each piece is an act of letting go, letting my mind be free and seeing where my hand and my unconscious mind lead me. This print is from the Anxiety collection.
